What Is an Ultrasonic Flow Meter?

Ultrasonic flow meters measure fluid velocity using acoustic waves. The two primary methods are transit-time (also called time-of-flight) for clean liquids, and Doppler for liquids with suspended solids or entrained gas. Clamp-on ultrasonic meters are non-intrusive — sensors attach to the outside of the pipe, requiring no pipe cutting, no shutdowns, and no process interruption.


Transit-Time vs. Doppler Method

Transit-Time (Clean Liquids)

Two transducers are mounted at an angle to the flow direction. The upstream-to-downstream travel time (t_down) is shorter than the return path (t_up) by a time difference ΔT proportional to mean flow velocity. Transit-time meters work with any acoustically transparent liquid, including hydrocarbons, deionized water, and pure chemicals — regardless of electrical conductivity.

Doppler Method (Slurries, Aerated Flow)

Doppler meters transmit a continuous ultrasonic beam into the liquid. Particles or bubbles moving with the fluid reflect the beam back at a shifted frequency (Doppler shift) proportional to velocity. They operate where transit-time fails — in turbid, aerated, or particle-laden flows.
